One billion dollars is how much US President Donald Trump is demanding countries pay if they permanently want to join his new Board of Peace. The global initiative was originally designed to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, but now seems to have been broadened out worldwide. Over 60 countries were invited and more than 30 nations have signed up but many European nations have rejected Trump’s invite. France and Germany argue it could undermine the United Nations and the UK is questioning Russia’s involvement given the war in Ukraine. Critics also worry the board could have a broader mandate that could rival the United Nations. Is it a viable organisation to help the people of Gaza or a power play by the US President?
