Missouri lawmakers are considering a proposal to eliminate the state’s individual income tax. House Joint Resolutions 173 and 174 would allow lawmakers to increase sales tax rates and expand sales taxes to more goods and services in order to eliminate the state income tax. Missouri currently receives about $8.5 billion annually from the income tax. Replacing that revenue could significantly reshape Missouri’s tax system. In this update, State Representative Stephanie Hein explains: • What the proposal does • Why sales taxes could increase • How services could be taxed for the first time • Potential impacts on Missouri families • What the proposal could mean for Springfield Public Schools According to the Missouri Budget Project, Springfield Public Schools could lose $27.5 million annually under this type of tax shift.
