In cima al borgo di Vairano si erge una fortezza composta da quattro torri (la più grossa di esse è detta “torre mastra”), oltre le quali, tuttavia, oggi resta poco altro che ruderi. Probabilmente, il castello medievale di Vairano Patenora fu eretto dai Normanni, ma secondo altre fonti ebbe origine persino in epoca precedente, ovvero nel secolo XI per volere di Ripandolfo VI. Fu quindi distrutto dall’esercito angioino di Marino Marzano e ricostruito, nel Cinquecento, per volere di Innico II D’Avalos con le forme di un castello aragonese. Allo stato attuale non è rimasto molto dell’edificio originario, se non le mura perimetrali, che conservano l’antica imponenza tipica di una roccaforte. Internamente gli occhi più esperti riescono ancora a riconoscere la divisione degli ambienti (le carceri, le cucine e la vecchia cisterna), ma un visitatore profano non vede altro che file di pietre e strutture in rovina. Il panorama è, da quassù, impagabile. Una volta all’anno il castello, come tutto il borgo, ospita luci e costumi della festa medievale che riaccende Vairano Patenora, per il resto dell’anno molto simile invece ad un borgo fantasma. Once a year the castle, like the whole village, hosts the lights and costumes of the medieval festival that rekindles Vairano Patenora, for the rest of the year very similar to a ghost village.
