Dr Sayer discovers old newspapers with articles about the 1920's Encephalitis outbreak, and goes to visit a professor who was alive at the time and who has additional pics/videos and personal knowledge about the effect of the disease on victim's brains. Dr Sayer opens window in his office and notices a little girl playing hop-scotch on sidewalk below ... has a hunch about Lucy. He & Eleanor do some repainting of floor to remove solid black stripe that he believes may be stopping Lucy from finishing her walk to drinking fountain across the room. To learn more about Leonard, Dr Sayer talks to Leonard's mother both at the hospital and at her home. He has opportunity there to see Leonard's bedroom where he read continuously . . . before losng his ability to speak and being admitted to hospital in 1939 when he was 20 years old.
