Prior to record date there is declaration date and ex-dividend date. And finally, dividend payment date. And if you are not sure what some of them mean, feel free to watch my other videos. First dividends are declared by the board of directors. This includes the amount, ex-dividend date, record date, and payment date. And record date is simply the cut-off date. Which means that all investors that are recorded on the company’s books by that date, will be eligible to receive dividends. Let’s say Company’s A record date is June 30th. It means that every investor who has money invested in this company and is registered on the books, will be eligible to receive next dividends. Record date usually comes couple of days after ex-dividend date. Which means that if you are not able to finalize the purchase of shares before the ex-dividend date, the original owner of shares will receive these dividends instead. It happens because even though you purchased shares before the dividends are distributed, the person or a broker who you purchased these shares from is still registered as the shareowner on Company’s A books. And, therefore, he or she is entitled to collect next dividends. This happens because it takes a couple of days for the new shareholder to replace previous shareholder on the company’s records.
