Is a 2005 Frame Still Relevant? Modernizing a Commencal for My Nephew

In Part 2 of the Commencal restoration, we finally bring this old full-suspension mountain bike back to life. This bike started out in a pretty rough state, but the goal is to rebuild it for my nephew who’s just getting into mountain biking. In this episode we move beyond simple restoration and start adding some modern upgrades. The biggest change is converting the drivetrain from an old 3x setup to a modern 1x11 drivetrain, along with fitting hydraulic disc brakes and rebuilding the forks. Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper bike build without a few unexpected problems along the way including chainring compatibility issues, brake fitment challenges, fork seal problems, and a bottom bracket surprise from the previous owner. Despite all that, we manage to turn what was nearly a scrap bike into something that should be ready to hit the trails again. This project proves that with a few affordable parts, some patience, and a lot of tinkering, you can bring an old mountain bike back to life for the next generation of riders.
