A great chart for teaching all the fundamentals of big band swing that draws on the traditions of the music and presents them in a fresh new way. Opening with the famous Gene Krupa floor tom riff sets the style as the ensemble builds to the sax section melody. The brass section takes over trading the melody back and forth before setting up the tenor sax solo. A trumpet solo follows close behind, supported by sax backgrounds. Next, in the tradition of Benny Goodman’s “Sing Sing Sing” the band breaks down to a unison trombone motif that builds throughout the ensemble to launch the sax soli.
