Using this advanced technique, archaeologists and volunteers from around the world are uncovering history once thought lost forever. Advances in archaeological technique led to one of the most stunning discoveries hidden in that discarded soil. Through wet sifting, tiny, colorful fragments began to appear—triangles, squares, and parallelograms. At first, they seemed like mosaic pieces, but their precision hinted at something far more extraordinary. After careful study, researchers realized these were not mosaics at all, but opus sectile—exquisitely cut, high-value marble flooring used only in palaces, elite guest rooms, dining halls, and the holiest areas of the Temple itself. Among the most extraordinary discoveries were ancient coins from across Jerusalem’s history, including pieces from the First Revolt, early “Yahad” coins from the 4th century BCE, and numerous Hasmonean and Herodian issues. The most remarkable of all was a pure silver Half-Shekel from the first year of the Great Revolt, discovered not by an expert, but by a fourteen-year-old volunteer. Inscribed with “Half Shekel” and “Holy Jerusalem,” and still scarred by fire from the Temple’s destruction, it is the first Half-Shekel ever uncovered from the Temple Mount—powerful evidence of Jewish worship, identity, and defiance in the years leading up to 70 CE. These discoveries directly challenge claims denying Israel’s past and expose why archaeology matters.
