Day 6 in Hakata (博多) | Temples, Soba, Fukuoka Castle & Our First Yatai Experience Day 6 in Hakata was a perfect blend of food, history, and slow travel. We started the morning at Boul’ange, fueling up before diving into some of Fukuoka’s most important temples and cultural landmarks. Our temple walk began at Joten-ji Temple, a historic Zen temple known for its quiet atmosphere and deep ties to Hakata’s past. Nearby, we stopped by the Udon Soba and Manju Origin Monument, marking the introduction of wheat-based foods like udon, soba, and manju to Japan—an important moment in Japanese culinary history that began right here in Hakata. Lunch was a highlight of the day at Shungetsuan Jotenjimae. Hands down, this was the best hot soba we’ve had in Japan—simple, refined, and absolutely unforgettable. From there, we continued temple hopping with visits to Myoraku-ji Temple and Shofuku-ji Temple, the oldest Zen temple in Japan, originally founded in 1195. Shofuku-ji holds major historical significance as the birthplace of Zen Buddhism in the country. Our next stop was Tocho-ji Temple, home to the awe-inspiring Wooden Seated Buddha, the largest wooden Buddha statue in Japan. Standing at nearly 11 meters tall, the Buddha was completed in 1993 and represents the Buddha of the Future. The interior experience is deeply moving, with Buddhist imagery depicting life, death, and rebirth. Filming is normally prohibited inside Tocho-ji, but we were honored to receive special permission to capture this moment for our channel. In the afternoon, we explored the Fukuoka Castle Ruins, followed by a relaxing couple of hours at Ohori Park. We took in the peaceful lake views, recharged our phones at Starbucks, and simply slowed down—one of those moments that makes travel feel meaningful. As night fell, we returned to the castle grounds for the Fukuoka Lights Festival 2025, where illuminated installations transformed the ruins into something truly magical. We wrapped up the night in Tenjin with our very first yatai experience at Yatai Takachan—classic Hakata street food, great energy, and the perfect way to end the day. Day 6 reminded us why Hakata is so special: incredible food, rich history, and moments that invite you to pause and just be present. 👉 Subscribe for immersive Japan travel storytelling. 🎥 Captured November 14th, 2025.
