Accliamed author Monica Ali delivers the annual English PEN HG Wells Lecture, exploring the threat that AI may pose to novelists and creatives in the future. This year the lecture was held for the first time in Newcastle at The Common Room, co-hosted by New Writing North and English PEN. Since 2014, English PEN has programmed the annual H. G. Wells Lecture. One of English PEN’s and by extension PEN International’s founding members, Wells served as the second International President of PEN from 1933-36 and again from 1941-46. During his tenure he witnessed the rise of fascism across Europe and oversaw the expulsion of PEN Germany, who had been co-opted by the Nazis. It was under Wells that PEN International underwent the radical and defining shift from an idealistically non-political organisation to a ‘World Republic of Letters and Creative Effort’ that intentionally defended what he called the ‘liberty of expression’.
