#HillOfCrosses #shubhravlogz #CrossHill #KaunasToŠiauliai #Lithuania #Šiauliai In today’s episode, we take you to one of Lithuania’s most spiritual and visually striking destinations — the Hill of Crosses, located near the city of Šiauliai in northern Lithuania. If you're someone who enjoys visiting places rich in history, symbolism, and culture, this is a site you won’t want to miss. We began our journey from Kaunas, the second-largest city in Lithuania. The train ride to Šiauliai took us approximately 2 hours, and it was a comfortable and scenic trip through the peaceful Lithuanian countryside. Once we arrived at the Šiauliai train station, we took a local bus followed by a short walk to reach the Hill of Crosses. So, what makes this hill so famous? At first sight, it may seem like a small mound covered with religious symbols, but the deeper you go, the more powerful the experience becomes. The Hill of Crosses (Kryžių Kalnas) is a symbolic place where people have placed hundreds of thousands of crosses, crucifixes, rosaries, and statues — each representing prayers, grief, hope, or gratitude. The origins of this site go back to the early 19th century, when families began placing crosses in memory of those who had died or disappeared during uprisings against the Russian Empire. Later, during the Soviet era, the hill became a silent symbol of resistance. The Soviets bulldozed it multiple times, but every time they did, locals and pilgrims returned under cover of night to replace the crosses — again and again. Today, it stands as a monument to faith, freedom, and perseverance. It's estimated that there are now well over 100,000 crosses here — possibly many more. They come in all sizes and materials, from simple handmade wooden crosses to ornate metal and stone sculptures. Some carry names and dates, others personal prayers, and many are adorned with rosaries, ribbons, or photographs. As we walked along the winding paths that cut through the forest of crosses, the atmosphere was quiet, reflective, and humbling. There’s something deeply moving about seeing so many acts of faith concentrated in one place — not just from Lithuanians, but from people all around the world. We also took a moment to leave a small cross ourselves, a way of connecting to the thousands of personal stories already standing here. There is a visitor information center nearby, where you can learn more about the history of the site, and a small shop that offers crosses you can personalize before placing them on the hill. Whether you're religious or not, the Hill of Crosses is an unforgettable place that stirs the soul.
