Varroa Resistant Hygienic Honey Bees are fantastic at just that, killing off and ejecting varroa and grooming one another almost to a fault. They also ultra clean all the hive interior surfaces and cells with their tongues. This is all well and good, we all want healthy bee lines that can survive on their own without treatment, but there are trade-offs. They often remove and eject pupae, or even partially hatched workers. They spend an inordinate amount of time grooming each other like monkeys combing through fur. The result is that they are much lower in honey production than many other lines of honey bees. I have this survivor stock in my observation hive and have been observing their behavior for several months. Not only are they slow in honey production, but the queen is laying faster than they can produce comb for. Wax production is ok, but they just can't expand the colony fast enough to suit the queen. If there is not enough ready resources, they may sweep through a hundred or more cells with eggs in them and ingest the eggs followed by a rapid surface cleaning of the entire hive interior. In this video sequence, you see a worker parked temporarily, while she gets a good grooming. This activity occurs all over the hive, but there are definitely areas where workers seem to wait for a grooming before resuming their duties. I hope you enjoy these observations! Thanks for watching and I welcome your comments.
