Christian Hultgren was the youngest of ten siblings. He was born in 1869, Sweden. At the age of 20, he followed his brother Henning Leonard to Chicago. His brother was a photographer and had his own studio where young Christian became a photographer. Two years later he was registered in the church register again in his home parish. Whether it was a lack of familiarity with America or homesickness in unknown. From 1906-1912 he worked as an object photographer at the Nordic Museum in Stockholm. He was interested in the dying peasant culture and the last days of self-sufficiency. Lugging around a primitive homemade camera he set out to capture this lifestyle before it was gone.
