After a shaky start the Hammers start to click. A 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest is achieved despite losing Marc Rieper to a red card. Unlucky defeats to Liverpool an Everton but then three wins in a row at home, coinciding with the loan signing of tricky Portuguese winger Hugo Porfirio. Porfirio is out of contract on 1 February but Sporting Lisbon will sell for £800,000 if all parties agree. Unfortunately, the better Hugo plays the more he resists Redknapp’s overtures. Cottee is sold to Selangor in Malaysia which raises the required cash but Hugo is a no-go. He is instrumental in the home wins over Leicester and Blackburn and the 4-1 demolition of Forest in the League Cup. Unlucky to lose at Tottenham, the Hammers are on the up, and just have to beat Stockport the gain a place in the last eight of the cup.
