This is the first video in what will be a series of videos delving into the unique strengths and weaknesses of each of Fromsoft's "soulsbourne" titles. I've never been able to play any of the Sony exclusive titles, so the ones that will be reviewed will be Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3, Sekiro, and Elden Ring. I wanted to start this series off with an exploration of why the "difficulty" of these games is only indirectly related to what makes them so great, and Dark Souls is the perfect game to review in order to make this case. Copyright notice: I've used the music of Simon Green, more widely known as Bonobo, throughout this video. More specifically I used almost the entirety of two of his albums, The North Borders and Black Sands. I was frequently listening to these albums during a period of college in which I replayed Dark Souls a couple of times, and for some weird reason these albums became inseparable from the imagery of Dark Souls in my mind. The fact that Dark Souls lacks a musical score outside of boss fights meant that I just kind of filled it in as the soundtrack in my mind, and in a weird way I think it sort of fits. Those two albums combine a ton of different styles of music into a bizarrely cohesive package that I find fascinating and mysterious, and I could say much the same of the world and art design of Dark Souls. This is a long winded way of pleading with the publisher Ninja Tune to not strike this video, the video will never be monetized, and I'll even add here that both of these albums are purchasable on all major music distribution platforms. 00:00 Intro 03:50 Category 1: Strength of Illusion 10:31 Category 2: Depth of Engagement 24:07 Category 3: Immersive Synergy 37:08 Category 4: Seamlessness 52:20 Final score, and concluding remarks #darksouls #gamereview
