Mustafa Rasheed gives a talk on shoulder instability at an FRCS Mentor session. The objectives of the talk are to outline the mechanism of shoulder instability, recap associated pathologies, and discuss management strategies for treating patients with an unstable shoulder. Mustafa will also give three example cases that could easily come up in the FRCS exam. Shoulder instability can be caused by various mechanisms, such as a fall or direct force on the proximal humerus. Neurological and vascular compromise should be assessed, and an apprehension positive and Joe's relocation test positive indicate instability. The prevalence of neurological injury with dislocation episode is strongly correlated to the patient's age.
