Buying an electric skateboard is not cheap. There are now a ton of options and you may be wondering which board, style, brand, etc. is right for you. In the video I share some key considerations to think about before buying your electric skateboard. Along with these tips I recommend on figuring out what's most important to you (range, speed, terrain, etc.). As mentioned in the video, here are some additional links and tips you may want to consider before buying: 1. Is it legal? One of the biggest challenges with buying an electric skateboard is figuring out if you're gong to get a ticket. In Vancouver electric skateboards are illegal. Despite all the electric skateboards across North America it's actually illegal to ride them in most city's in Canada and the US. That said, getting a ticket is uncommon. It definitely happens but as more of these are being used it seems the the enforcement for riding them is becoming a bit more slack. My suggestion, go into manual mode if you see a cop! 2. Are you a giant? At 5'8 and 170lbs most electric skateboards accelerate and travel at speeds faster than I'm comfortable going 90% of the time. However, if you're a bigger person and carrying more weight than you may need a more powerful battery. If you're over 200lbs I'd recommend getting a Boosted Board Stealth for example over the Boosted Board V2. 3. Travel - If you plan on travlling with your board you need to know the restrictions. As of 2018, majority of air carriers DON'T allow lithium battery-powered electronic devices with a watt-hour rating of over 100Wh. Boosted Board standard batteries are OK but the extend range batteries are not... 4. Off Road? The One Wheel is an awesome board for all terrain riding. It also is the best as far as weather proofing goes. With a hub you won't get splashed or need to worry about the battery being damaged in the rain. The downside? If the batteries dies you can't ride it and it's a different feel to the classic skate/ surf carving you get from a traditional long board. I personally feel more comfortable ripping on an electric long board. 5. Lights - GET LIGHTS! if you plan on riding at night they are simply a must have. Here is a link to a 10% discount on my favorite skate lights: Purchase Link: https://shredlights.com/discount/Blaise 6. Carrying the Board - The Boosted Board Mini is amazing as far as size goes. But don't be fooled, it's still damn heavy. Most electric longboards are extremely annoying to carry. I've rubbed grip tape on my pants (which ruins the pants) and also struggled to carry boards through shops and stores. If you need to carry your board over long distances a smaller board is definitely a better way to go. 7. The Ride - A long board with bigger softer wheels is the most forgiving when it comes to cruising. If you want to be able to ride over cracks or uneven pavement a long board is the way to go
