Riza Reji was dealt a tough hand when she was diagnosed at birth with Down syndrome — a genetic disorder characterized by the presence of an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21 that alters brain development and impairs neurological function. The 23-year-old also had to undergo a complex surgery at age seven to address the misalignment of the top two vertebrae in her spine. Despite all the setbacks, Reji is on her way to becoming the first Indian to participate in the annual beauty pageant organized by the Global Down Syndrome Foundation in the US this November.
