Between the Faubourg St Antoine and rue de Charenton is the Beauvau market, also called Marché d’Aligre. In the 18th century, it provided for the food needs of the large population of the suburb made up of cabinet-making artisans and its adjacent trades. Popular and working-class, this suburb behind the Bastille was the origin of many uprisings which brought down several regimes. The covered market was built in 1779 and bears the name of a canoness of St Antoine Abbey. Aligre is the name of a widow who was a benefactor of the Foundling Hospice. Hospice replaced by Square Trousseau. If you manage to push open a few doors on rue d’Aligre, you will discover the vestiges of past activities. The always colorful and fragrant displays provide sunshine from one end of the year to the other. The market is divided into 2 parts. The covered market, in very beautiful halls appreciated by lovers of architecture, is dedicated to food stalls on which we return pell-mell to brands such as the Aouba café, the Langlet-Hardouin cheese dairy, the Vegetarian Boucherie and even the oils and spices from the Sur les Quais boutique. The open market takes place on the square and even spills over into rue d’Aligre. There is a food section and numerous second-hand dealers (household accessories, fabrics, old books, etc.). When you come to the market in the morning, you will be rewarded with a riot of colors and tastes. Every day here the street turns into a paradise for food lovers. Everything is here! This is a great place where you can stroll and feel part of the culinary life of the city.
