Marc Peter Bonaca, MD, MPH, talks about Acute Aortic Syndrome and the importance of diagnosing and treating rapidly, as BWH continues to refine and improve on their first rapid response team for Acute Aortic syndromes. The team provides 24-hour emergency level response and customized therapies to all patients suffering from aneurysms, dissections, and traumatic disruptions. At Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), the Heart & Vascular Center has developed multispecialty teams for rapid assessment, triage, and management of patients with acute conditions, such as Acute Aortic syndromes, pulmonary embolism, and shock. Cardiovascular specialists at BWH have pioneered interdisciplinary approaches to the treatment of cardiovascular disease and routinely perform procedures combining cardiac and vascular surgery and interventional cardiology for the treatment of many conditions, including complex aortic and thoracoabdominal disease. Specialists in cardiac surgery, vascular and endovascular surgery, cardiology, vascular medicine, cardiovascular imaging, and cardiac and vascular anesthesia collaborate to provide expert evaluation for all acute aortic emergencies combined with multiple approaches to treatment, including endovascular techniques, minimally invasive cardiac procedures, and open procedures, for patients with complex aortic disease. Advanced procedures also include repair and reconstruction of all five aortic segments/sections, valve-sparing aortic root replacement (replacing the aortic root, located at the junction of the heart and the aorta, without an aortic valve replacement), and abdominal aortic repair.
