The Point Pleasant Canal (often called the Seaside Heights-Point Pleasant Canal) is a man-made waterway in Point Pleasant, NJ, creating the Barnegat Bay Peninsula island, connecting the Manasquan River to the Barnegat Bay, and forming part of the Intracoastal Waterway, crucial for boaters by offering a safe passage along the Jersey Shore. Completed in 1925, it splits Point Pleasant, features lift bridges like Route 88, and facilitates passage for commercial fishing fleets and recreational boats, though it's known for strong currents. Key Features & Significance: Man-Made Connection: It's a two-mile-long channel connecting the Manasquan River (and Manasquan Inlet) to the northern end of Barnegat Bay. Island Creation: Its construction effectively turned the Barnegat Bay Peninsula into an island, separating Point Pleasant from Point Pleasant Beach and other barrier islands. Intracoastal Waterway: It serves as a vital segment of the larger New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway, providing a protected route for vessels. Boating & Navigation: It offers a crucial passage for the East Coast's fishing fleet and Coast Guard, as well as recreational boaters. Bridges: Two significant lift bridges, the Route 88 Bridge (Loveland Town Bridge) and the Bridge Avenue Bridge, cross it, opening frequently for boat traffic. Strong Currents: Due to tidal flow and engineering efforts (like boulder placement), the canal can have powerful, sometimes hazardous, currents. In essence, it's a vital waterway that defines the geography of the central Jersey Shore, enabling maritime travel and creating distinct communities on either side of its path.
