[South Side Flats, Pittsburgh, PA - Recorded 01/05/19 (1st clip), 01/12/19 (rest)] UPDATE: Sadly car 36 was sealed in 2021, and possibly soon most or all will be taken out-of-service. 1st, I would like to thank you all for a half a decade on YouTube! Man, time flies quick! To celebrate, I’m presenting you with 4 completely original hand-operated winding-drum Otis freight elevators that are over a hundred years old! Wow! This place has 2 rows of 19 freight elevators! No really! At least that’s how it was when this place was first built! That’s a LOT! In the West Building, all except car 15 are now gone. They were either removed, or have been replaced with passenger elevators. On the East, whole different story. Most of the 1s on that side still work, and I got 5 of them! I got cars 40 and 50 since this video. Most of the freight elevators in the East Building are still inspected, but very few are used, most are turned-off except for inspections and occasional maintenance. There are no car-gates (although there are rear-gates, and electric-eyes that were added and don't work; the electric eyes appear to be the only modifications done), and the landing-gates would NOT meet modern-day codes, however these still pass inspection, as they were installed before the 50s. What you do when you 1st enter is, turn the handle whichever way you want to go, then they immediately start moving AS the gate closes by the gravity of the counter-weight! I’ve NEVER seen this before. All of these have big heavy industrial fire-doors, which some are open, but most aren't, mostly because the cars aren't being used, don't work, or have been removed. Most of these are 2-speed, and automatically slow-down (self-leveling?) when reaching terminal-landings, but some are single-speed, and don’t. What's also interesting is when you flip the stop-switch, you can't just flip it back and they'll immediately start working again; they have to be reset in the machine room. They’re all rickety/old, but of course that’s to be expected. They're also pretty dangerous. If the landing gates fail to close, they can run with the gates OPEN!! But if they do close, they do lock. These are all winding-drum, and the machines are over-head, access for all's on the roof. Overall, these are all epic in their own-ways, and is amazing how they're still running after over 100 years! There were also originally 6 larger elevators in the center that were tiller-line, served the 1st and 2nd floors, and could carry locomotives! But by the 60s only 2 remained, and sadly those were removed in 2016. The square opening straight-ahead at 07:12 might be a remnant of 1. Also Happy Valentine's Day! ELEVATOR INFO: Type: Freight Installed: 1905 State equipment number: 015, 034, 036, 038, 052 DISCLAIMER: Electric car switch control elevators can be un-safe if you do not know what you are doing. If you do not release the handle on-time at terminal landings, the car can hit the final limit and won't move and you can become trapped (can vary depending on the elevator, always better safe than sorry). If there is no inner-gate, always stand a fair distance away from the opening while operating. Freight elevators in general, especially with manual doors, can be hazardous due to pinch points on the doors, or large openings (especially on older freights). Please be cautious and stay safe. © Elevating Western PA
