Low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions in pap smear. Squamous intraepithelial lesions means the abnormal growth of squamous cells in the cervix, that is the mouth of the womb. So any abnormal growth of squamous cells in the womb is called squamous intraepithelial lesion. This SIL, can also be called can be low grade or high grade. The low grade lesions means the starting of the increase in the squamous cells has to be followed up. Now these SIL, whether low grade or high grade these are precancerous conditions definitely. But they do not mean that every single person who has SIL, low grade or high grade will go into cervical cancer. They are a precancerous finding of a cervical cancer. But not everyone goes into, rarely some will go where there is a low grade lesion. So a low grade lesion, what you have to do, number one, depends also on the age. So a young girl with low grade lesion you follow it up. Repeat a pap smear after 1 year. Do a HPV testing. In a middle age or a upper age group women, you repeat a pap smear, you do HPV testing. You can do a colposcopy guided biopsy to confirm the lesion and also various level of treatment of this low grade SIL can be loop excision, loop electrosurgical excision of the part that or called LEAP, or you can do a Conization or you can do a Laser therapy. So these are the precancerous finding, but not everybody goes into cancer and so it has to be just followed up and it has to be treated appropriately.
