There are several calendars in our daily lives. The Christian Church has one as well. We are beginning the Easter Cycle, with Lent, Easter and Pentecost. The colors of the altar cloth, the lectern and pulpit, and stoles worn by clergy and choir are significant to the seasons. During Lent purple is used to show penitence and royalty. White and gold are used throughout the Easter season. Red is the color of fire, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Red is used on Pentecost and other times when we emphasize the work of the Holy Spirit. Red is also the color of blood, the blood of Christ along with other martyrs. Green is the color of growth and is used after the Day of Pentecost. As we make our journey through Lent, we are challenged to humbleness. What are you adding to your routines for personal penitence reflections and lessons?
