The city rejoiced—people sang in the streets, waving the Eritrean flag, believing their long night of occupation had finally ended. But within days, Ethiopian warplanes returned, unleashing napalm and bombs on homes, hospitals, churches, and mosques. They destroyed buildings that turned to ashes. The sky burned red with fire, the sea reflected the flames, and thousands of civilians were killed in what became known as the Massawa Massacre. From the ashes of that destruction, the people of Eritrea rebuilt Massawa with courage and determination. The massacre stands as a dark chapter in Eritrea’s history, but also as a testament to its people’s resilience.
