We Remember The Flames " The Massawa Massacre" - "ቅብጸት"

In February 1990, the port city of Massawa became both a symbol of freedom and unimaginable tragedy. After years of fierce struggle, the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF) launched Operation Fenkil, a daring assault that liberated Massawa from the Ethiopian Derg regime. The city rejoiced—people sang in the streets, waving the Eritrean flag, believing their long night of occupation had finally ended. But within days, Ethiopian warplanes returned, unleashing napalm and bombs on homes, hospitals, churches, and mosques. They destroyed buildings that turned to ashes. The sky burned red with fire, the sea reflected the flames, and thousands of civilians were killed in what became known as the Massawa Massacre. From the ashes of that destruction, the people of Eritrea rebuilt Massawa with courage and determination. The massacre stands as a dark chapter in Eritrea’s history, but also as a testament to its people’s resilience. Each year, Eritreans remember those who perished in the bombing—men, women, and children whose sacrifices helped secure their nation’s independence. Their memory burns like the fire that once consumed the city, a lasting reminder that Eritrea’s freedom was forged through pain, unity, and unbreakable will. Lyrics: Ashes falling, children cry, Massawa’s streets beneath a burning sky. Homes turned to dust, prayers lost in flame, Innocent souls never spoken names. Brothers and sisters pulled from the stone, Mothers still search for those never home. The Derg thought fear could silence the fight, But the spirit of Massawa rose in the night. Oh Massawa, we carry your pain, The tears of your people still fall like rain. Scars in our hearts, we’ll never erase, Fenkil’s fire lit freedom’s face. The sea remembers, it whispers the cries, The city of salt, where so many died. But out of the ruins, the truth still appears, We stand strong, we are here, Eritrea. Echoes of bombs, but hope never dies, Through smoke and sorrow, our flag still flies. The blood of the martyrs, the price that we paid, Carved into history, their courage engraved. Oh Massawa, your memory lives on, Through every tear, we’re still holding strong. From ruins to freedom, we honor the brave, Your sacrifice echoes beyond the grave. Generations remember, the lessons are clear, Through pain and through struggle, we conquer our fear. No empire’s shadow, no terror, no chain, Can silence a people who rise once again. Oh Massawa, your story we sing, From sorrow and ashes, new dawns will spring. Your courage and fire, forever we share, Eritrea, we rise—we are here, we declare. “We will never forget. We stand strong. We are here. Eritrea is my home."
