The Evolution of Zandvoort: From Streets to F1 Glory

Zandvoort Circuit Layout Evolution In this Circuits of the past video, we show you the evolution of the Zandvoort circuit, home of the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix. The Zandvoort Circuit opened in 1948, but before there were already races in Zandvoort on a street circuit. That was in 1939 for the first time for car races. After World War II the street circuit was used twice for motorcycle races. In 1948 the permanent race track opened, so the street circuit was no longer used. Actually the desigh of the new track foresaw in a connection with the old street circuit to race on a combination of both. But this connection was never built. The original layout of Zandvoort was twisty but very fast. It contained a lot of fast sweeping corners with the famous Tarzan Corner as the ultimate overtaking point. Still today this corner is famous for it’s spectacular overtaking moves. The first change to the layout of Zandvoort came in 1973. For the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix new safety measurements were required, like a guard rail around the full track. Also the fast right-left combination named ‘Bos In’ was changed into a chicane. After the reconstruction the corner was remaned in Panorama Corner. Despite all the new security measures, Formula 1 driver Roger Williamson lost his life during the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix, after his car crashed into the new guard rail and caught fire. The next change to the Zandvoort circuit was in 1980, when the fast left-right combination named Hondenvlak was also changed into a chicane. A year earlier there was already a temporary chicane built for Formula 1 on this site. From 1980 the fast section was changed into a permanent chicane and remaned into Marlboro Corner. In the 1980’s the Zandvoort Circuit had a lot of financial troubles and also to deal with politicians who wanted to close the track. In an attempt to do so, in 1989 the municipal of Zandvoort - owner of the circuit ground - sold a part of the circuit to a group of investors who wanted to build a holiday resort on the site. That meanth a part of the circuit would be demolished and it was no longer possible to drive a lap. In an attempt to safe the track a new section was built to keep the track suitable for club races. This 2.5 kilometer short version was known as the ‘Interim Circuit’. While a part of the circuit was demolished for the holiday resort, most of the unused part was left abandoned. Here you see some pictures of the abandoned section in the 1990’s. Those years a plan was made to built an extension that would include this old section and bring back the Zandvoort circuit to a normal length. After a long battle against Dutch bureaucracy, they finally could start with the construction of the extension at the end of 1998. In 1999 the new circuit was finally opened and contained about 50 percent of it’s original layout again. With a view to a possible return of Formula 1, a variable chicane was built in the fast Rob Slotemaker Corner. There was also a plan to demolish the Gerlach Corner and the Hugenholtz Corner, to create a larger paddock for Formula 1. In 2019 the return of Formula 1 was confirmed for 2020. Fans of the circuit feared the reconstruction, but the new Formula 1 owners wanted to keep the track as much as it was. So the Gerlach Corner and the Hugenholtz Corner were spared. However, the old Hugenholtz Corner was moved a little inside and as a compromise it was replaced by a high banked version. Also the last corner, named after Dutch double Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk, was replaced by a high banked corner. This to create overtaking possibilities on the Start/Finish Straight. These new banked corners are unique for a modern Formula 1 track! So, that’s how the current Zandvoort Circuit looks. As we all know, the 2020 Dutch Grand Prix was cancelled because of the Covid pandemic. But in 2021, Formula 1 will finally return to Zandvoort after 36 years!
