IMNS webinar: Dr Danial Chitnis - EEsim: an open-source browser-based circuit simulation tool

Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems (IMNS) Webinar Series Date 24 February 2021 Abstract In this talk, I will introduce EEsim, a new open-source browser-based simulation tool that I have created for electrical and electronic circuit analysis. EEsim’s input is a SPICE compatible netlist, and the output is a plot of current and voltage nodes, information on the simulation results, and a downloadable CSV file for further analysis in external popular analysis software packages such as Numpy and Python. Since the input netlist is text-based, it has the advantage of version control via Git, easy sharing, scripting, and automation. The backend of EEsim is based on ngspice, and all the computation happens inside the browser using WebAssembly (WASM) technology. Additionally, it respects the user privacy since no data leaves the browser’s sandboxed environment. In summary, EEsim offers a convenient tool for brainstorming and sharing of circuit simulation with a modern UX/UI contributing to the growing community of the open-source integrated circuit hardware. Biography Dr Danial Chitnis is a Chancellor’s Fellow of Electronic in School of Engineering at University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. He received his BSc in electronics engineering from Chamran University of Ahvaz, Iran, in 2007, an MSc in Microelectronics and system engineering from the University of Bristol in 2009, and a DPhil in engineering science from the University of Oxford in 2013. He has more than two decades of experience in developing electronic systems and integrated circuits with a focus on photonics and imaging application. He has developed various optoelectronics technology demonstrators including single photon imaging, optical communications, and brain imaging systems. In 2017, he joined Edinburgh to continue his teaching and research in Electronic Engineering. He is part of the co-investigator team at QuantIC, the UK Quantum Technology Hub in Quantum Enhanced Imaging, developing detector arrays and systems for a variety of applications from fundamental quantum physics to consumer cameras. IMNS Webinars This talk was part of IMNS webinar series hosted by Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems (IMNS). These webinars explore a wide range of topics in engineering including device fabrication, photonics, integrated circuits, sensors and systems.
