PSI Seminar, September 8, 2021, 11AM MST Mark V. Sykes What is the importance of basic science and data analysis to NASA planetary exploration? What is R&A? Where is R&A in the NASA PSD budget? What funding levels have been recommended by Decadal Surveys for planetary R&A? To what extent has NASA complied with these recommendations? What should be the Decadal funding recommendation for R&A? Do we have to choose between R&A and missions? How do we ensure NASA compliance with R&A funding levels recommended by the Decadal Survey? Why are these programs important to the US planetary science community? What can you do? SUMMARY: What We Need From The Decadal Survey Budget information for the NASA Planetary Science Division obtained through the Freedom of Information Act from NASA. This information is all publicly available at https://planetarypolicy.org. PDF of presentation is at: http://planetarypolicy.org/210908_SEM... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Planetary Science Institute is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to Solar System exploration. It is headquartered in Tucson, AZ, where it was founded in 1972. In 2016 PSI established a second office in Lakewood, CO (near Denver). PSI scientists and educators are involved in numerous NASA and international missions, the study of Mars, Earth, and other planets, the Moon, asteroids, comets, interplanetary dust, impact physics, the origin of the solar system, extra-solar planet formation, dynamics, the rise of life, and other areas of research. They conduct fieldwork on all continents of the Earth to understand our planet and others. They are also actively involved around the world in science education and public outreach though school programs, children's books, popular science books, podcasts, and art.
