Growing up in Sendai, Japan, Kazuko Covington witnessed destruction from war and violence. Despite this, she and her father carried sketchbooks wherever they went, drawing the beauty that persisted through the brutality. Now, those sketches are her blueprints as she quilts intricate and astonishingly beautiful pieces, stitching together what she had lost. To Covington, art is the way we pay reverence to memory. Her quilts are the way she sees the world, in both fond memories of her past, and sincere dreams for our future. Pieces like “Ray’s Hope” are her testimony, her witness that God has stitched every intricate detail in the tapestry of our lives.
