What is Blocking? In construction, blocking refers to short pieces of wood or other materials that are used to provide additional support, stability, or attachment points within a structure. This is especially useful when you are attaching weight bearing items to your walls or ceiling. In today’s video we installed a pull up bar but also showed you how you can install a kid’s playgym in your home. Blocking can be installed over your drywall like in our video, or behind your drywall if you are doing a larger renovation project. Grab bars in bathrooms, heavy light fixtures such as chandeliers, hooks, handrails, these are all good contenders for blocking! Blocking is a very useful construction skill to know, it can add stability, strength, and proper support to various components of a building. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and longevity of the structure and safety of those inside it. STEP-BY-STEP To block a wall properly first determine the location: Identify the area on the wall where you want to install the blocking. It should be a stud bay, which is the space between two vertical studs. Then Locate the studs: Use a stud finder or tap on the wall to locate the vertical studs within the marked boundaries. Studs are usually spaced 16 or 24 inches apart. In our case because our walls had not been painted in the garage, we could see there the spackle marks were left. {Cut the blocking material (we used some 2 by 4 scraps from our renovation) using the appropriate cutting tool. Position the blocking by holding it against the wall and aligning it with the marked boundaries. Use a level to make sure they are straight. Secure the blocking using deck screws, for support. Tug at the wood to make sure it is secure} Repeat this { cutting, positioning and securing} of the wood with as many pieces as you need to reach desired size. Remember, the specific installation process may vary depending on your wall type and the weight you intend to suspend. It's always a good idea to consult a professional or a structural engineer if you have any concerns about the weight or the structural integrity of the wall.
