Save the Planet | The Thresher Shark Conservation Project | Alor, Indonesia

In 2019 Indo Pacific Films had the opportunity to join a team of marine scientist on board of the MSY Samata Luxury Liveaboard in Alor, which is in the East Nusa Tenggara Region of Indonesia. The team on board was made up from a cooperation of different NGOs which were the Thresher Shark Project , Conservation International and the Indonesian Manta Project. Indo-Pacific Films, supported by the Underwater Tribe had the great pleasure to document this incredible project from its early stage. The goal of the trip was to be able to catch a Thresher Shark, place a satellite tag and release it. Each tag would remain with the shark for a duration of 2 months, period after which the tag will automatically release and surface to transmit its data to the satellite. This is has been a very positive and successful experience as all the data in each tag was successfully downloaded after the tags were surfaced. This means that each shark has survived! The important data has been analysed and will greatly help in understanding better the Thresher sharks movements and help in taking the right measurements to further protect these sharks which are at high risk of extinction.
