Military vehicles leaving airport STORYLINE: Hundreds of Philippines troops on Monday arrived in Jolo to join the full-scale offensive against hundreds of Muslim rebels hiding out in the mountainous southern Philippines. A C-130 cargo plane flew into Jolo with about 250 troops from another province to relieve soldiers who been fighting for more than a week. An army commander said on Monday that the troops were choking off supplies of food and ammunition in an effort to force surrender of the rebels. Soldiers, backed by helicopter gunships, bombarded rebels with artillery and rocket fire on Sunday on Jolo island after week-long clashes that left more than 60 people dead. Three army battalions and two battalions of Marines supported by elite scout rangers have been deployed to crush the rebels, whose strength fluctuates between 100 to 300, said Brigadier General Agustin Dema-ala, who heads troops involved in the assault. He said their job is to ensure peace in the area. The rebels are followers of jailed Muslim leader Nur Misuari. They have recently attacked troops in the region, provoking the military offence. At least 27 soldiers have been killed and more than 50 others wounded in a week of clashes, officials said. The military said troops have killed 37 gunmen, all followers of Misuari.
