According to Radio Azatlyk Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan and former President of the country, paid a visit to the United States. Turkmen state media presented this visit as an important diplomatic step aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. Independent journalism inside Turkmenistan has been almost entirely eliminated. Under these conditions, international and independent foreign media, including Radio Azatlyk, remain among the few sources providing relatively independent information to citizens. The Human Rights Platform “DAYANÇ / Turkmenistan” emphasizes that: — access to reliable information is a fundamental human right; — transparency of government actions is an obligation of authorities to their citizens; — suppression of independent media constitutes a violation of Turkmenistan’s international obligations, including Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantees freedom of expression and access to information.
