Jyapu Diwas is celebrated annually. It honours the Jyapu community of the Newar people in the Kathmandu Valley—an indigenous group traditionally known for their expertise in agriculture, craftsmanship, and cultural preservation. The day recognises the contributions, identity, and heritage of the Jyapu people. Various programs such as cultural rallies, traditional music and dance performances, exhibitions of traditional tools, and communal gatherings are organised. It is also a moment to take pride in their hard work, cultural knowledge, and role in sustaining Newar traditions. Yomari Punhi is a major Newar festival celebrated on the full moon day of Thinla, the second month of the Nepal Sambat calendar. The festival marks the end of the rice harvest season and celebrates abundance and thanks the deities for a good harvest. The highlight of the festival is the preparation and sharing of Yomari, a special steamed sweet made from rice-flour dough, filled with chaku (molasses), sesame, or khuwa. Families prepare Yomaris and offer them to deities such as Annapurna and Kubera, praying for prosperity. Children go door to door asking for Yomari, adding joy and communal spirit to the celebration.
