Games are often classified into genres; its purpose is to define games in terms of having a common style or interaction. Video games are typically grouped into genres based on game play interaction. Most games fall within a particular category. Some games bridge different styles and can appear under more than one category simultaneously. Within a single genre, games will often share common characteristics, but because of inherent differences in game design, and genre mixing, sometimes games can belong to multiple genres, and occasionally, games within a single genre will look quite dissimilar from one another. Action games usually require quick reflexes, timing and decision making skills. It’s a broad category whose subgenres include fighting, platform, and shooter games involving combat with projectile weapons. Planetside 2 is a good example of an action game, covering everything from timing and quick reflexes to decision making. It involves shooting, getting shot, dying, waiting to spawn and then doing it all over again. You may think that, that is all there is to an action game if you dislike action/shooting games. While this is true to a degree there are many other things that are being missed out. While you are shooting, getting shot, dying, waiting to spawn and then doing it all over again, take a look at the world around. In PlanetSide 2 there is, in fact, an open world to explore adding the genre adventure to the list. With this extra interaction in the game it enhances the game play by providing a different place to attack or fight on all the time. With this interaction added to the game, with action already added, we see strategy and problem solving being used in an action game. In PlanetSide 2, strategy is very important when fighting in a squad, platoon or outfit. Strategic strikes and well placed troops can do huge amounts of damage to hold or attack a point. PlanetSide 2 is also a massive multiplayer online game, MMO, with 100 plus players on at one time. This enables players to interact with real people from all over the word. Adding these different interactions in the game changes it and improves its game play. With these extra genres added, its target audience has widened to not just the players that like hard core shitting games to those that like to play a mix of genres were they can explore and play together in a new world or challenges.
