Initially treated as a murder case due to reported injuries, including bite marks and scratches on her neck, the investigation shifted to a suicide angle after a suicide note was found in her bag on the same day, alongside evidence that she purchased insecticide, confirmed by forensic tests detecting poison in her body. The note, verified to match Manisha’s handwriting, expressed her distress and apologized to her parents, stating she didn’t want to be a burden and was pursuing BSc Nursing. However, her family, particularly her father Sanjay, rejected the suicide claim, insisting she was not suicidal and alleging police negligence, as they dismissed an initial missing person complaint on August 11. The case sparked widespread protests across Bhiwani, Dadri, and Loharu, with villagers blocking highways and demanding a CBI probe, citing discrepancies like the delayed mention of the suicide note, unexamined CCTV footage, and inconsistencies between post-mortem reports from Bhiwani and PGIMS Rohtak. The latter ruled out sexual assault and attributed injuries to animal scavenging, not sharp weapons. Public outrage led to the transfer of Bhiwani’s SP, suspension of five police officers, and a 48-hour internet shutdown in Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri. On August 20, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini handed the case to the CBI for an impartial investigation. Manisha’s last rites were performed on August 21 after family consultations. Key unresolved questions include why the suicide note and pesticide evidence surfaced late, the nature of a reported two-hour WhatsApp chat with a friend the night before her death, and discrepancies in the post-mortem reports. The CBI probe is ongoing to address these concerns.
