The Dolomites are beautiful, and so are these hikes! Check out the map at 10:43 to see where these hikes are in relation to Cortina. / @flynnhikes All six are within 20 to 45 minutes from Cortina: 0:00 Dolomites 1:10 Lago Dobbiaco 2:25 Lago di Braies 3:32 Croda da Lago 5:21 Cinque Torri 6:57 Tre Cime 8:46 Prato Piazza 10:41 MAP 10:56 Montepulciano 1. Lago di Dobbiaco/Toblacher See (4.5mi/7km) Drive north from Cortina on SS51 about 40 minutes to the town of Dobbiaco and park in the sports center parking lot. Follow the trail signs clear path to and then around the lake. The hike is about 4½ flat miles. There are lots of trails heading in various directions if you’re looking for something longer and steeper. 2. Lago di Braies/Pragser Wildsee (3mi/5km) This lake is one of the most beautiful in the Dolomites, and it’s only 10 miles from Dobbiaco. Depending on the time of year you visit you can either drive to the paid parking at Lago di Braies or make a reservation to take the bus up to the lake. The 3-mile hike around the lake is flat and wide. Most visitors don’t venture beyond taking a picture of the view from the boat house which means the trail around the lake is relatively quiet. 3. Croda da Lago (Lago Federa) 6.2mi/10km Drive south of Cortina on SR48 about 20 minutes to the Ponte du Rucurto parking area. Start at Trail #437 and hike to Croda da Lago, a headwall that towers over Lago Federa, a small alpine lake. The parking area is small, but when we got there at about 10 in the morning in mid-September there were spaces still available. Parking will probably fill up much sooner in the busy summer season. The trail is clearly marked and easy to follow. There are beautiful views of the valley and nearby mountains along the way, including Cinque Torri in the distance. At the lake the Rifugio Palmieri serves meals. After walking around the lake head back the way you came, 6¼ miles hike in all. If you don’t want to drive you can from Cortina to Croda da Lago. There are longer hikes that you can do from the Ponte du Rucurto trailhead, too. 4. Cinque Torri/Fünf Türme 5.1mi/8k The 5-mile loop up to the Cinque Torri rock formation starts at the Bai de Dones ski lift parking area, about 30 minutes south of Cortina via SR48. Cinque Torri means “Five Towers”, and they can be seen for miles. From the parking lot, follow the obvious trail in either direction from the parking lot (we hiked counterclockwise) until you circle up to the top of the ski lift which is also the location of the Rifugio Scoiattoli. The second half of this loop hike is quite different from the first. After passing under the five rock towers you’ll soon arrive at restored trenches, constructed during WWI to provide shelter for soldiers protecting the mountain pass below. After exiting the trenches, pick up the trail again and hike the last mile, passing by the Bai de Dones lake, which is actually more of a small pond and then you will soon be back at the parking lot. 5. Tre Cime/Drei Zinnen 6.5mi/10k Tre Cime - Drei Zinnen in German - means “Three Peaks”. The name is from the three massive, rocky prominences that rise up from the surrounding area. This 6½-mile loop hike is so popular that, just like at Lago di Braies, there’s a limit on the number of vehicles allowed up the road. Pay your entry fee - you may have a long wait at the payment booth if the parking areas near the trailhead are full - and find a parking space near the Rifugio Auronzo. The trail is quite wide in most places, and the hike isn’t steep because essentially you simply circle around the base of the three peaks. Be prepared with a rain jacket and waterproof boots. There are several rifugios along the way for a meal or a break. At the Rigufgio Lange Alm I had the best bowl of potato soup I’ve ever had! Top it off with a piece of apple strudel at the Rifugio Auronzo to celebrate completing the trail. 6. Prato Piazza 10 mi/16 km This hike, my favorite, is a 10-mile loop hike to Prato Piazza, Plätzwiese in German. In English it means “open field” or “broad meadow”. Drive north from Cortina on SS51 about 20 minutes and park at Cimabanche. The trail is marked with a sign and soon follows a creek (or a raging river of snow melt, depending on when you are there) and is easy to follow. After a couple miles the path widens into a flat farm road. Then it’s an easy stroll along the tractor path along to the Prato Piazza, the meadow where there's a rifugio with homemade meals. You can go back the way you came for a 6-mile out-and-back hike, but we looped back along a gentle farm road for a total of 10 miles. The last mile of trail was blocked by a cow pasture, and we slogged back to our car through a dry river bed. Ciao!
