Week 35 of a series I'm calling "52 Licks." 1 new jazz phrase each week. We focused on an underrated drummer a few weeks ago, in Sonny Payne. Well, here's another: Dannie Richmond. Dannie was Charles Mingus's drummer for years, but I bet it takes 30 jazz drummers to be named before his name pops up. And that's a shame because he can FLAT OUT PLAY. And all those great Mingus records are driven by him. Here's a 4 bar phrase he plays when trading with Mingus on a YouTube clip I found. While there is a "lick" that he starts with, I think the greatest part about it is how well he takes that very simple lick, and crafts a 4 bar phrase out of it. It's a mini-composition!
