with Grace Burns, piano ~~~ Gabriel Fauré's Sicilienne (Op. 78), originally for cello and piano, is a beloved piece often arranged for flute and piano. Known for its gentle, nostalgic melody and 6/8-time signature, it draws inspiration from the Pelléas et Mélisande suite. The Sicilienne began as an orchestral sketch in 1893 for incidental music to Molière's Le Bourgeois gentilhomme. It was later developed and arranged for cello and piano in 1898. Fauré included the Sicilienne in his Op. 80 incidental music for Maurice Maeterlinck's play Pelléas et Mélisande, where it introduces a scene in Act Two (it is the fourth movement of the orchestral suite, published in 1909). This version was arranged for flute in 1989 by Robert Bigio.
