Afshan Jafar is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Connecticut College. Her research and teaching interests are globalization, transnational women's movements, fundamentalist and nationalist movements, gender, and the body. Her first book, Women's NGOs in Pakistan (Palgrave Macmillan, August 2011) uncovers the overwhelming challenges facing women's NGOs and examines the strategies used by them to ensure not just their survival but an acceptance of their messages by the larger public. Her current research focuses on the globalization of beauty ideals, with a special focus on South Asia. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
