⚛️ What can Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (#smrs) realistically deliver for Energy Transition? In this edition of our UN Scientific Advisory Board video series, Amandeep Gill, Under-Secretary-General and Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology at the United Nations, discusses the Board’s latest Science Brief on SMRs, which you can read here: 📘 https://www.un.org/scientific-advisor... SMRs are smaller nuclear reactors that can generate up to about 300 MW of electricity each. They’re marketed as quicker to build, made in factories, and easier to scale than today’s large nuclear plants. The promise: reliable, low-carbon power that can support renewables and keep the energy grid steady. But the biggest questions aren’t just about the technology – they’re about who can build them, pay for them, and regulate them. From costs and on-time delivery to waste reduction, safeguards, and long-term stewardship, the message is clear: technology alone isn’t a strategy. Governance, policy design, smart regulation, and public trust will determine outcomes. 🧭
