"Mom, I don't need you to go on this field trip with me. I'm not five!" I yelled at my mom as she pulled up to my school. After I said it a wave of regret crept over me. My mom looked hurt but she didn't say anything. We got out of the car and walked towards the school. Hi, my name is Lianne. Troy asked as he pointed towards the dairy section in the supermarket. My friends teased me as I blocked my face and walked quickly out of the supermarket. “Don’t worry about the others,” my best friend Shanice said, “Your mom is just trying to keep you safe in a chaotic world!” she squeezed my hand. I smiled at Shanice but I wished that my mother did not have this crazy obsession with me. Even though I was allowed to go everywhere I was never alone. My mother was either there as a chaperon or she was lurking somewhere in the shadows. When I was younger it made me feel safe to know that I could reach out to my mom if I felt as though I were in danger. Now, at the age of fifteen, it was embarrassing! I think the only place where my mother didn’t follow me was at school but even then I was sure I saw her face a few times in the crowded hall of the school. Every time I asked my mom why she followed me everywhere she would say it was for my protection. When pressed about it my mother didn't say anything further. The only true friend that I had was Shanice. Her mother passed away when she was little and she wished she had a mother so she understood that my mother wanted to protect me. We spent so much time together that people often thought we were sisters because we looked so much alike. The boys at school stayed at arm’s length. They didn’t want to be followed when they went on dates. They were afraid my mother would tell their parents where they went and what they did. While most of my classmates started dating at age thirteen, I longed for a boy to ask me out. About a year ago, Alex Levinton was the new kid at school. He had the bluest eyes and a smile that made me forget what I wanted to say. When we saw each other in the hallway I didn’t trust myself to talk so I just smiled or nodded in his direction. Then it happened. “Hey, Lianne. How are you?” Alex asked as he walked up to my locker where Shanice and I were having a conversation. “Ummmm...ummmm,” I mumbled. Shanice elbowed me in the side and looked at me with questioning eyes. “I’m good, I’m good,” I fumbled like an idiot. “I would love to take you out on Friday night,” Alex said. “I uhh….” I was at a loss for words. Shanice stepped in, “Friday night is great. What time should she get ready for?” “The movie starts at 7pm so I will pick her up at 6pm,” Alex smiled. “She will be ready by then,” Shanice said and began to pull me away, “Bye Alex,” she shouted over her shoulder. Shanice pulled me into the girls bathroom. My face was red from embarrassment! “I sounded like a bumbling idiot,” I sighed as I placed my face in my hands “You sounded cute,” Shanice comforted me, “But guess who has a big date on Fridayyyyyy!” Shanice squealed. We held hands and danced around the bathroom then reality hit me. “What am I going to do about my mom?” I asked, devastated. “Listen, I’ll tell my dad that I will be sleeping over at your house and we can do a swap there. Don’t tell your mom I’m coming over so when she comes into check on you I’ll be there,”
