Amélie Vialet & Anne-Marie Moigne, HNHP - UMR7194 (CNRS - MNHN - UPVD) The Yunxian open-air site near Wuhan is located above the 4th terrace of the Han River in central China. During excavations in the 1990s, it yielded 493 lithic artifacts (choppers, a few handaxes, picks, flakes), 1838 animal remains and two Homo erectus skulls in a level dated to 936,000 years ago. The latter are, with the remains of Lantian-Gongwangling, the oldest in China. The fauna includes many carnivores (about 5% of the remains): Ursus thibetanus, Xenocyon dubius, Pachycrocuta brevirostris, Homotherium, Megantereon, Panthera gombaszoegensis and specific to Asia: Ailuropoda melanoleuca, Felis peii, Arctonyx collaris. The herbivores are also Asian: Stegodon orientalis, Rhinoceros sinensis, Tapirus sinensis, Equus yunnanensis, Bubalus, Cervus elegans, Muntiacus. The animal carcasses have probably been accumulated in a kind of meander by a natural phenomenon. Some bones, notably of deer, show anthropic fractures attesting that humans came to recover meat.
