Unlike most districts, Boston Public Schools needed buses that could provide great performance for up to 10 hours a day. Propane autogas buses meet BPS’ performance needs, on top of driving a lower total-cost-of-ownership, greatly reducing emissions, and creating a significantly quieter environment for students and drivers. According to Fleet and Compliance Manager Peter Crossan, the propane autogas buses make a big difference when loading students who use wheelchairs. With propane autogas buses, these students are no longer exposed to a cloud of black diesel exhaust. Propane autogas and its lower total-of-ownership has also impacted BPS. They estimate they will save up to $1,000 every school day running propane autogas buses compared with diesel. On a yearly basis, they estimate they will save 40 percent of maintenance time compared with diesel. The propane autogas buses have earned an overwhelming positive response from the public, schools, and drivers. In the short term, BPS plans to purchase another 86 propane autogas buses — with the goal of running their entire school bus fleet on propane autogas.
