TRANSCRIPT: When the Orchard Gardens K-8 School in Roxbury was founded, the school represented a new vision for the community. However, the vision was never realized, and -- by 2009 -- the school had become one of the lowest performing schools in Massachusetts. Half of the students were worried about being bullied at school, attendance was low, and the student failure rate on the MCAS was one of the highest of any school in the state. Orchard Gardens students were being left behind. In the spring of 2010, Orchard Gardens was named a "turnaround" school and given a fresh start . A new team of teachers, led by Principal Andrew Bott, set out to transform the school and the lives of our students. Every classroom was staffed by an excellent teacher -- all of whom had high expectations for themselves and for their students. The school day was extended to include more art, music and dance classes. One-on-one support provided by mentoring and enrichment programs helped meet the needs of every student. After just two years, Orchard Gardens students have made some of the highest gains in the state, learning at a faster rate than students in nearly every other school. Attendance is up, the school climate is peaceful, and students are engaged in learning. Many people have been impressed by our amazing students. The turnaround of Orchard Gardens proves that transformation IS possible - in even the most failing public schools. Thanks to the support of our community partners, donors, families and to our extraordinary team of educators our children have a brighter future.
