Outside of Indiana Jones, Steven Spielberg isn't necessarily one for making sequels to his critically acclaimed and beloved works. In fact, Spielberg REALLY only did this one other time and it was the follow up to one of the most popular films in his filmography: Jurassic Park. Now, celebrating it's 25th Anniversary, The Lost World: Jurassic Park or Jurassic Park 2 was a film with ridiculous amounts of hype surrounding it, the weight of the world on its shoulders as it was the sequel to the most profitable and beloved blockbuster ever at the time. Expectations were monumental and as we've seen countless times before, high expectations often result in disappointment and what I would consider being an unfairly maligned response. You see, The Lost World has a lot more in common with the direct sequel (or I guess prequel) to another one of Spielberg's classics, Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and wouldn't you know but the responses also happen to have a lot in common as well! Audiences at the time weren't prepared for a sequel to a groundbreaking film to go in such a different direction, to double down on the pulpy b-movie schlock that helped inspire Spielberg in the first place. They weren't prepared for Spielberg to get a bit meaner, more grotesque, more blunt with his messaging. They weren't prepared for a beloved side character to take center stage as the lead of the film only to be completely transformed by his experiences in the previous film. Like any sequel, The Lost World goes bigger, more action packed, and climaxes with a Godzilla or King Kong homage that makes it abundantly clear what kind of movie Spielberg was making in the first place. And look if it was all monster spectacle and no substance, I think I'd be more understanding of audience's disappointment in The Lost World. But I think because of Jurassic Park 2's breakneck pace, thrilling set pieces, and Spielberg's childish tendencies, people often forget that there's a pretty compelling allegory and message here regarding parenting that's distinctly different from most other Spielbergian parent commentaries and it beautifully uses the T-Rex and it's baby as the mirror to Ian Malcolm's own journey with being father. And that's just scratching the surface on why The Lost World is underrated.
