WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio—The 88th Air Base Wing Security Forces Squadron held a Memorial Service on Friday, March 23, at 2 p.m. for Military Working Dog "Nisan" assigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Nisan, a German Shepherd, was born in Germany on May 1, 2001. He was assigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in May of 2003 as a Patrol and Narcotics Detector. He deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom and served numerous stateside assignments including missions for U.S. Customs and U.S. Border Patrol, resulting in more than 9 kilos career finds, and 500 plus arrests. Nisan was laid to rest Monday, March 12. Military working dogs typically are used for identifying explosives and narcotics, rooting out insurgents, and providing security for American troops. While the dogs may be considered equipment by Air Force regulation, the undeniable bond with their handlers is evident. Nisan served the United States Air Force with his most current K-9 Handler, SSgt Seth Dale, for a little more than year. The service was conducted in true military fashion, and included a procession by the Patriot Guard Riders, presentations, and concluding with TAPS and a 21 Gun Salute.
