The recording contains Ysaÿe 2nd sonata for solo violin and Ricci's arrangement of Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra". Recording from my first performance of these works, which I started working around 2 months ago and will be part of the program for my bachelor recital in Utrecht Conservatory. Ysaÿe 2nd sonata was composed in 1923 and dedicated to french violinist and Ysaÿe's friend Jacques Thibaud. Written in 4 movements titled "Obsession", "Malinconia", "Danse des ombres", and "Les Furies", it is a very dark piece, closely connected to death since Thibaud's son died. This sonata seems to go through different stages of pain, from obsession and melancholy to the angry furies of the finale. The first movement starts with fragments from Bach’s third partita, which are interrupted by "brutalement" outbursts. It is worth mentioning that Thibaud was staying with Ysaÿe and was obsessively practicing Bach's Preludio. The Dies Irae theme, a Gregorian chant which is often used in classical music and has for centuries been associated with death, appears hidden in bariolages at the "Obsession", comes back at the end of the lamenting "Malinconia", noted ad. lib. in mensural notation, then is the subject of the theme and variations of “Danse des ombres” and returns in “Les furies” a few times. The encore "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" was composed by Francisco Tárrega in 1896/1899 for guitar, this version for violin was arranged later by violinist Ruggiero Ricci, it displays the ricochet bow stroke and showcases Ricci's virtuosic use of the instrument.
