Freebasing Methylamine

Yesterday, I finally moved about 2.25kg of methylammonium chloride from some plastic bags to old fish oil bottles because it seemed fitting. The hydrochloride is so hydroscopic that it pulled some water through 3 layers of HDPE and formed a solid brick that kinda took on a yellowish color. I had to crush it between paper with a mallet, and surprisingly didn't spill a ton, but it coats your gloves in dissolved methylamine and I still had to sweep up and dissolve any that spilled and wash it off the hammer and such... so it's still a messy process. Once I finished, I decided to finally prepare a solution of the freebase amine in methanol since I will need that as a catalyst for the nitroaldol reaction I intend to do. I had 1 bottle that didn't fit with the rest anyway, so I used approx 3moL of the HCl salt and 125g of NaOH. I only used 250mL of MeOH, so max conc. is about 12M. I will titrate once I'm done with the laborious drying steps due to my neglecting the suck back flask and drying tube... #chemistry #science #amateurchem #methylamine
