The leaders discussed ways to develop bilateral ties and cooperate in the post-pandemic era agreeing to develop a comprehensive and forward-looking partnership. The Colombian leader is in Seoul for a state visit. Kim Min-ji has the details. South Korea and Colombia will be bolstering their cooperation in the digital and environmental sectors to achieve economic recovery in the post-COVID era. President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday held a summit with his Colombian counterpart Ivan Duque at the Blue House his first in-person sit down with a leader from a Latin American country since the pandemic began. Presidents Moon and Duque agreed to expand their comprehensive and forward-looking cooperation with next year marking 60 years of diplomatic relations. "Our two countries will expand cooperation and further develop bilateral ties regarding food, healthcare, the Fourth Industrial Revolution and other new challenges. I hope this state visit and today's summit serves as an opportunity to expand our substantive cooperation on various fronts and that we go forward together on a path of prosperity." The two sides launched a free trade deal in 2016 and since have increased their bilateral trade and investment. Moon asked for Colombia's interest and support to enable South Korean companies to participate in infrastructure projects in the Latin American country which Duque welcomed noting Seoul's outstanding technology. President Duque also said he would help South Korea join the Pacific Alliance a regional integration initiative involving Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Peru. Moon, meanwhile, thanked Colombia for coming to South Korea's aid in the Korean War the only country in central and South America to do so expressing his administration's willingness to expand support for war veterans and their families. Duque reaffirmed support for the Korean Peninsula peace process. "70 years ago, we were united to protect the principles we share, and today, Colombia and South Korea are cooperating in the fields of development, innovation and creativity to provide more opportunity to the people of both countries. I believe that state-of-the-art technologies, like 5G, will become an arena for win-win cooperation between the two sides." The leaders were also present for the signing of six MOUs including ones on bolstering bilateral cooperation on healthcare excavation of remains from the Korean War and on cultural exchanges. Prior to the summit they exchanged state medals in recognition of their countries' respective contributions toward each other's national development and security. The visit was arranged to mark ten years since the forging of a strategic partnership and seven decades since Colombia helped in the Korean War. The Colombian President arrived in Seoul on Tuesday for a three-day state visit. Before wrapping up his visit on Thursday, Duque will visit the Demilitarized Zone and the War Memorial of Korea.
